 In 1981 the Chairman Harold
Fainlight MBE, as Mayor of Skegness and a member of the County Council Social Services
Committee, called a meeting of interested persons and organisations with a view to
establishing a Day Centre for the house bound within a 16 mile radius of Skegness. Forecasts Indicated that an
increasingly ageing population with many retiring to the coast, where they are attracted
low rainfall, flat terrain, drop curbs and plenty of fresh air and sunshine. A Management
Committee was formed and the building, housing the project was provided by the Social
Services and the Local Health Authority. The Centre was opened in 1985 by the Earl of
Scarbrough.
Today, Skegness Day Centre is a truly local
organisation run by local people for local people, we have no regional or County
Headquarters to maintain. All funds are devoted to running the centre.
Users of the Centre are people
who are disabled or infirm and in need of additional care to help them to
remain in their own homes. Users come to the centre via referral. The
average age of attendants is 74 years, our youngest being
50 years, our eldest over 100 years of age.
The Centre provides
transport for disabled persons (collect and return) from local towns and
villages within a 16 mile radius, on a "door to door" basis. Care, comfort
and companionship is enjoyed at the Day Centre. To many who are housebound,
regular visits, provide an exciting highlight to the week plus a welcoming
break for a hard working carer.
